Colorectal Cancer

Kentucky has some of the highest rates of colorectal cancer deaths in the country. But through early detection and treatment, the disease is also highly preventable. Nearly all cases that are diagnosed early can lead to a complete cure.

At CHI Saint Joseph Health, we’re proud to help lead the fight against colorectal cancer in the Lexington and Central Kentucky communities we serve.

About Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a type of gastrointestinal cancer that usually begins as a growth, called a polyp, on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Some types of polyps can change into cancer over the course of 10-15 years, but not all polyps become cancer.

More than 95 percent of colorectal cancers are known as adenocarcinoma, though the cancer symptoms are often silent until the disease has progressed. Regular screenings can help catch polyps before they become cancer or in the earliest stages of the disease, when it’s highly treatable.

Prevention

CHI Saint Joseph Health is here to help you stay proactive about your health. Start by understanding your personal colorectal cancer risk factors, and how you can take control right away. If you have a strong family history of colorectal cancer or other factors that may increase your risk, we also offer comprehensive cancer genetic counseling and testing to address any concerns.

Detection

If you’re over 45 or have a family history of colorectal cancer, regular screenings are your first and most powerful weapon. We offer a full range of colorectal screening options, including colonoscopy, which has shown to reduce colorectal cancer deaths by more than 60 percent. Do it for yourself—it’s fast, simple and can help prevent polyps from ever becoming cancer.

Speak with your primary care provider to learn more about a screening colonoscopy. If you need a primary care provider or would like to request an appointment, call 859.313.2255.
