Longitudinal Experiences
Drug Information
Residents will develop the necessary skills to provide quality and timely drug information to healthcare professionals and patients.
Hospital Practice
Residents will learn to effectively staff the inpatient pharmacy by learning the medication-use system as well as preparing and dispensing medications according to facility policies. Staffing consists of two 8 hour shifts every third weekend and one evening during the week. The resident will attend regular medical staff meetings with the ability to pick from areas of interest.
Nutrition Support
The resident will gain experience with assessing nutritional requirements as well as the formulation and adjustment of TPN in a variety of patient populations.
Anticoagulation
The resident will develop the skills necessary to manage anticoagulation regimens in adult patients.
Pharmacokinetics
The resident will broaden their ability to dose and monitor medications with narrow therapeutic indices through collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Cardiac Code Response
The resident will attend all codes while in-house and make interventions to medication regimens as necessary. The resident will become ACLS certified and hone their skills during emergency situations.
Community Service
The residents will volunteer every eight weeks at a local Salvation Army Clinic that serves an indigent patient population. The clinic is staffed by the University of Kentucky medical residents and students as well as pharmacy students. Residents will staff the clinic and dispense medications (limited supply) from an on-site drug cabinet and provide accurate drug information as requested.
Medical Writing
Allows the resident a separate time away from rotations to focus on their research project including drafting of a poster, presentation, and manuscript.
Teaching
Multiple teaching opportunities exist for residents including student precepting on rotations, monthly presentations to pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals, weekly clinical conference meetings, CE lectures at a local KSHP meeting. Residents will also have the opportunity for didactic teaching at the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy through their Teaching Certificate Program.
Research
Residents will complete a year-long residency research project. This will include submitting the project proposal to the resident's research committee, obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, preparing a poster at the ASHP-Midyear clinical meeting, presenting the research findings at a regional residency conference, and submitting a manuscript for publication.
Professional Development Experience
Each year, the residents will travel to other residency programs in order to gain insight and perspective into different models of residency training. The residents choose which programs to visit and upon returning will share what they have learned from the other residency programs and how we could potentially improve our program.
