Saint Joseph East Receives the 2017 Women’s Choice Award
Among America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety, Orthopedics and Bariatric Surgery

Lexington, Ky. (August 30, 2017) – Saint Joseph East, part of KentuckyOne Health, has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety, Orthopedics, and Bariatric Surgery by the Women’s Choice Award®. The award signifies that Saint Joseph East is among the top hospitals in the United States for each category.

“Being the provider of choice for all patients is our goal, and it is particularly meaningful among women,” said Eric Gilliam, president, Saint Joseph East. “Women make 80 percent of the health care decisions and need to know they are putting themselves and their family members in safe hands.”

Patient Safety (Rank: Top 15 percent)
Health care has made significant strides in patient safety in recent years. Hospital-acquired conditions declined 21 percent from 2010 to 2015, resulting in 125,000 fewer patient deaths, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hospital-acquired conditions are conditions that a patient develops while in the hospital being treated for something else.

As an America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety recipient, Saint Joseph East is one of 451 hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award. It recognizes Saint Joseph East as a preferred provider among women and for implementing safe practices that have saved lives.

Orthopedics (Rank: Top 11 percent)
Because women have higher rates of arthritis than men, an estimated 60 percent of joint replacement surgeries are performed on women. In a national survey conducted by the Women’s Choice Award, female orthopedic patients identified the following key priorities when choosing a hospital for orthopedics:

·      Single source for orthopedic services
·      Solid patient safety record
·      High recommendation ratings

Saint Joseph East was selected as one of America’s Best Hospital’s for Orthopedics for preference among women and its incidence of surgical complications. It’s the only award recognizing excellence in orthopedics based on criteria that considers patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

Bariatric Surgery (Rank: Top 8 percent)
Diet and exercise alone are sometimes not enough for women who struggle with weight, especially as they age. The America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery award recognizes Saint Joseph East for high preference among women, along with appropriate accreditations and high safety rankings based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid methodology.

An American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery study found that the risk of death from any cause is considerably less for bariatric patients than for individuals affected by severe obesity who have never had the surgery. The data shows that cancer mortality is reduced by 60 percent for bariatric surgery patients, and death as a result of diabetes and heart disease is reduced by more than 90 percent and 50 percent, respectively
