 ‘Power of One’ Reception Honors 106-Year-Old Nurse for Accomplishments for Women and Minorities
Ms. Willie Mena Jones-Glass was Jewish Hospital’s first African American nurse

In the 1940’s, Ms. Willie Mena Jones-Glass made history when she became the first African American nurse hired at Jewish Hospital. Nurse Glass, now 106-years-old, was born in Cameron, Texas and earned her nursing degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1936. She has spent her lifetime breaking barriers in the health care industry for women and minorities, and now resides at the Masonic Homes of Kentucky in Louisville.

In honor of her contributions in nursing and minority rights, KentuckyOne Health’s Division of Diversity and Inclusion, along with the Kentucky Branch of the Black Nurses Association, will honor Nurse Jones-Glass at the Inaugural Power of One Reception on Monday, Feb. 27. An award will be named after her, and will be given in her honor annually to others who follow in her footsteps and have made a difference in the health care community.
