KentuckyOne Health Facilities Recognized for Outstanding Organ and Tissue Donation Practices

Louisville, Ky. (October 5, 2015)— The Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) recognized KentuckyOne Health facilities in Louisville and Lexington for achieving significant results in organ and tissue donation. The facilities were recognized at KODA’s annual awards dinner on September 15.

Jewish Hospital and University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville and Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, all part of KentuckyOne Health, received the Organ Donation Performance Award. Jewish Hospital, Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East were awarded the Tissue Donation Performance Award.

The hospitals were recognized for applying successful and efficient organ and tissue donation policies and practices which help reduce deaths, while providing outstanding care from physicians, nurses and other health care employees to patients and their families.

“Providing exceptional care for our patients is something we take great pride in doing. Recognition for our outstanding efforts in these health care practices speaks volumes of these facilities, and the capable and compassionate medical professionals of KentuckyOne Health,” said Damian P. Alagia III, MD, chief physician executive of KentuckyOne Health.

According to KODA, more than 110,000 Americans are on the waiting list for donated organs, including nearly 1,000 people in Kentucky. A new name is added to the waiting list every 11 minutes. Every year, an estimated 6,000 people die while waiting for an organ transplant. Eighteen people die each day due to the lack of a donated organ.

Since 1987, KODA has been dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Currently, the organization serves 114 counties in the Commonwealth.
