U.S. News & World Report Names James Graham Brown Cancer Center Best in Louisville for Cancer Care
Louisville, Ky. (August 19, 2014) – James Graham Brown Cancer Center, part of KentuckyOne Health, has been ranked as one of the best hospitals for 2014-15 for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. James Graham Brown Cancer Center is the only hospital in Louisville recognized for cancer care.
“We are on a mission to generate new knowledge in cancer care and to create more effective approaches to prevention, diagnosis and therapy, while delivering compassionate care to cancer patients throughout our region,” said Donald Miller, M.D. PhD., director, James Graham Brown Cancer Center. “The distinction by U.S. News & World Report is evidence of the top-notch, patient-centered care we provide.”
The James Graham Brown Cancer Center is home to a robust clinical and basic science research program. Combining these research elements in a treatment environment provides the best opportunity for discovery of new techniques and therapies.
The center opened in 1981 with a $12 million gift from the James Graham Brown Foundation and the citizens of Louisville with a mission of relieving the pain and suffering caused by cancer in Kentucky. The building was donated to the University of Louisville in 1987. In 2012, University of Louisville Hospital and James Graham Brown Cancer Center formed a partnership with KentuckyOne Health.
“The James Graham Brown Cancer Center is an outstanding healthcare resource for our community,” said Ken Marshall, president, University of Louisville Hospital. “In addition to providing excellent care to patients, the center is dedicated to improving the standard of care for patients everywhere through internationally recognized research and the latest clinical trials.”
For 2014-15, U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and ranked the top 50 in most of the specialties. Just three percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2014-15 earned national ranking in even one specialty.
U.S. News also recognizes hospitals that perform nearly at the level of their nationally ranked peers and represent valuable regional sources of quality care.
“The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” says U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “A Best Hospital has demonstrated its expertise in treating the most challenging patients.”
U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
The rankings are freely available at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2015” guidebook, available in August.
