Traveling Dance Company Offers Workshops for Patients and Healthcare Providers Program provided by Kentucky Center Arts in Healing Program

Louisville, KY (May 20, 2013)—KentuckyOne Health will host a series of therapeutic workshops later this month for stroke survivors, brain injury patients and caregivers presented by The Kentucky Center Arts in Healing Program.

The workshops are presented by the Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater Company, which has been recognized by the Kennedy Center as a national model in the area of arts and healing, and honored by the National Endowment for the Arts for Best Practices.

“Meaning in Movement,” a workshop for stroke survivors, brain injury patients and their partners will be held on Monday, May 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Frazier Rehab Institute located at 220 Abraham Flexner Way in the 10th floor dining room, and again on Tuesday, May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Jewish Hospital Medical Plaza, located at 100 East Liberty Street, Suite 100.

The “Meaning in Movement” workshop helps stroke survivors, brain injury patients and their partners rediscover the creative mind-body connection through movement.  Participants are invited to share their life stories and experiences. These stories are translated into movement to help find expression for the complex feelings and pressures, which result from stroke and brain injury.  The workshop can accommodate wheelchair-level participants.

Another workshop, “Caring for the Caregiver,” a movement/story workshop for healthcare providers, will be on Tuesday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at Jewish Hospital Medical Plaza, located at 100 East Liberty Street, Suite 100.  It will focus on helping healthcare professionals find expression and support for the emotional issues and unacknowledged stress associated with their work.  This workshop was first introduced in 1992 and has been presented at healthcare facilities throughout the United States, Canada, Israel, Russia, Taiwan, and Bermuda.
