Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Receives Grant From WHAS Crusade for Children for New Birth Center Equipment

MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (July 25, 2023) – The Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation, on behalf of Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, has received $8,000 in funding from WHAS Crusade for Children to assist the hospital's most vulnerable patients – newborns.

With this grant, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling, will purchase an additional jaundice meter for its birth center. This tool is a non-invasive method to screen infants for jaundice without drawing their blood, streamlining the process and making it more efficient when timing is critical.

“Saint Joseph Mount Sterling is proud to welcome more than 200 babies into the world each year, and with this funding, will us to purchase additional technology to continue offering state-of-the-art, efficient care for newborns during those critical hours,” said Delaine Thiel, CFRE, vice president of philanthropy, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation. “We are thankful for the generous funding from WHAS Crusade for Children to help us bring the latest cutting-edge technology to care for our patients.”

Jaundice is a condition that causes the skin and whites of the eyes to turn yellow due to the blood building up a fluid made in the liver called bilirubin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of newborns are diagnosed with jaundice, which typically develops in newborns during the first 72 hours of life. Newborns should be monitored closely for any sign of the condition during this critical time. If left untreated, jaundice can lead to brain damage.
