MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2025) – Saint Joseph Mount Sterling has awarded more than $32,000 in grant funding to Gateway Children’s Services and the Sterling Community Food Coalition to improve the well-being and health equity of the Montgomery County area. The funding will be used for the 2025 calendar year.
“Gateway Children’s Services and the Sterling Community Food Coalition show incredible compassion and remain invaluable partners in improving the health and well-being of Montgomery County,” said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. “We are proud to support their impactful work, and we are excited to see the lasting difference they will make through this grant funding.”
Gateway Children’s Services was awarded $16,000 to help elementary school students with needs resulting from poverty, mental illness, addiction and situational life events.
“We are incredibly grateful to receive this grant from CHI Saint Joseph Health because it will empower us to directly address the critical social determinants impacting the well-being and academic success of students and their families attending Owingsville Elementary School,” said Denise Spittler, CEO Gateway Children’s Services. “This funding will allow us to provide vital educational resources on nutrition and substance use prevention to hundreds of children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. We are confident that this program will make a significant, measurable difference in their lives, increasing their knowledge and building a healthier future for our community.”
The Sterling Community Food Coalition was awarded $16,800 to help provide healthy food choices in its food pantry.
“We look forward to providing the significant benefits this grant will make possible for our food pantry visitors this year. Saint Joseph Mount Sterling has been a valued community partner from day one and we are thrilled and honored to receive this support,” said Jeffrey Liles, board member and grant coordinator.
Across Kentucky, CHI Saint Joseph Health awarded $493,910 through the grant program, which was open to nonprofit organizations that address the following priorities – substance use disorders, mental health and mental disorders, and weight status, physical activity and nutrition – through projects planned for the next calendar year. The priorities were identified in Saint Joseph Mount Sterling’s most recent community health needs assessment, which is conducted every three years to help the hospitals and community partners identify and address priority health and social needs faced by residents and the region.
This opportunity was part of the CommonSpirit Health Community Health Improvement Grants program. CHI Saint Joseph Health and Saint Joseph Mount Sterling are part of CommonSpirit Health, created in 2019 when Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health came together to create a national health system.
