Saint Joseph London Now Offering da Vinci Xi Surgical System

LONDON, Ky. (Feb. 7, 2025)Saint Joseph London is now offering a state-of-the-art surgical robot, enhancing minimally invasive procedures for patients in the Laurel County area. This advanced technology, the da Vinci Xi, is set to improve outcomes for procedures such as abdominal and hiatal hernia repairs, appendectomies, and gallbladder removals.

“We are always looking for ways to raise the bar and provide the latest in care for our patients,” said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph London. “Patients in southeastern Kentucky need only to travel to London for access to surgeries with this advanced technology, which provides a quicker recovery time than traditional surgical procedures.”

The da Vinci system has revolutionized minimally invasive surgeries. This advanced robotic system allows surgeons to operate in real-time using a console, providing unmatched precision and enhanced visualization that surpasses the capabilities of the human hand and eye alone.

“Using the da Vinci Xi is like having two extra hands in the operating room,” said Nicholas Capal, DO, general surgeon, Saint Joseph London, who performed the first surgery with the new robot on Feb. 5. “I guide the instruments via a console while looking through an advanced 3D vision system that gives me a better view of the anatomy.”

Surgeries performed with the da Vinci Xi utilize small cuts, less than or equal to one centimeter long, small surgical instruments, a laparoscopic camera and fewer stitches, allowing patients to recover quicker and with fewer complications than traditional open surgery. There are also several benefits to procedures performed with the da Vinci Xi, including faster healing time, lower rates of complications, smaller scars and less pain after surgery.

The da Vinci Xi can help surgeons perform a multitude of minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Capal said surgeons will use the robot for all types of abdominal and gastrointestinal surgeries.

“Patients can expect much less postoperative pain than traditional open surgeries, reducing the need for opioid pain medications, even after more involved hernia surgeries,” said Dr. Capal. “Adding the da Vinci Xi to our operating room is a significant advancement in the surgical care we provide at Saint Joseph London. Our goal is to bring as many types of procedures as possible to our community, so our patients with complicated medical concerns don’t feel like they have to travel out of town for surgery.”

All surgeons, nurses and operating room staff have received extensive training on the new da Vinci Xi to ensure the highest level of patient safety and care.
