LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 21, 2023) – The Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, on behalf of the Yes, Mamm! program, has received a $20,000 grant from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund to continue its mission of providing mammography screenings and diagnostic services to some of Kentucky’s most medically underserved communities.
Through the grant, the CHI Saint Joseph Health – Breast Care Center will be able to provide 100 screening mammograms and – if needed – further diagnostic testing for 120 patients in Kentucky. This funding will also help provide activities for support groups for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Our goal with the Yes, Mamm! program has always been to provide screenings for women and men to be able detect signs of breast cancer as early as possible,” said Delaine Thiel, CFRE, vice president, CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations. “We know early detection saves lives and this funding from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund is another source of funding that helps us continue to achieve our mission.”
Early detection in fighting breast cancer is critical. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%. Yes, Mamm! provides the tools – such as mammograms and biopsies – to diagnose breast cancer in the early stages, providing patients with more successful treatment.
The Yes, Mamm! program works with local health departments to identify individuals in central and eastern Kentucky who are uninsured, underinsured or medically underserved and in need of these services.
