Saint Joseph Berea Receives Grant for Nearly $400,000
Funding Will Expand Green Dot Violence Prevention Program in Berea Schools

Berea, Ky. (July 18, 2018) — Saint Joseph Berea, part of KentuckyOne Health, has received a grant for $388,300 from the Catholic Health Initiatives Mission and Ministry Fund to expand its Green Dot violence prevention program in Berea. The mission of the Green Dot Program is to provide schools and communities with tools and prevention strategies to address many types of bullying. This added funding will bring the program into two more schools in Berea.

“This generous gift will allow our successful Green Dot anti-bullying program to expand and educate sixth through eighth grade students at Berea Community School and Foley Middle School from 2018 to 2021,” said Neva Francis, Vice President, Healthy Communities, KentuckyOne Health. “We are so thankful for the ability to continue providing students with the knowledge and tools that they need to intervene when bullying is witnessed.”

The Green Dot Program engages both students and community members in order to establish intolerance of violence as the norm in local schools through learned behaviors and actions. This program is currently in place at Madison Southern High School and Berea Community School for ninth through 12th grade students. With this expansion, a total of four schools in the Berea area will receive Green Dot training.

“We believe this program is so important in educating students with the goal of making civility the norm,” said Stephanie Moore, Chair of the Saint Joseph Berea Foundation board. “We are thankful for our community partners who are also committed to reducing violence in our community.”

Saint Joseph Berea has engaged Berea College, church leaders, law enforcement and elected officials through the initiative to work toward that common goal.

This initiative was led by Neva Francis, Vice President of Healthy Communities for KentuckyOne Health; Brian Hill, Green Dot Program Educator; and Janell Samuels, Director of Proposal Development, KentuckyOne Health Foundations.
