KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care Reaccredited by AADE
to Provide Quality Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support
Lexington, Ky. (September 5, 2018) – KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care has achieved the significant milestone of reaccreditation by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). Accreditation represents a high level of quality and service to the community, and the ability to better meet the needs of Medicare recipients and others affected by diabetes in central and eastern Kentucky.
KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care provides diabetes and nutrition-related services at the following facilities:
- Saint Joseph Hospital
- Saint Joseph East
- Saint Joseph Berea
- Saint Joseph Jessamine
- Saint Joseph London
- Saint Joseph Mount Sterling
- Jewish Hospital
- Jewish Hospital Shelbyville
- Medical Center Jewish East
- Medical Center Jewish Northeast
- Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital
“This reaccreditation would not be possible without the exceptional work that our diabetes and nutrition care team members provide daily,” said Amanda Goldman, director, KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care. “They are changing the lives of community members each day, helping them lead a healthier and more active life.”
KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care offers diabetes self-management education sessions, helping participants focus on healthy eating, monitoring, taking medication, being active, problem-solving, reducing risks and healthy coping. Those participating in the program’s diabetes self-management education sessions during FY 18 saw an average 2.2 percent decrease in hemoglobin A1c levels, and an average weight loss of seven pounds.
Diabetes education services utilize a collaborative process through which people with diabetes work with a diabetes educator to receive individualized care to help them reach their health goals. Diabetes education is a covered Medicare benefit when delivered through an accredited program. It is also a covered benefit through most health insurance plans.
“Evidence shows diabetes education and support is helping people with diabetes to lower their A1c’s and obtain the knowledge and skills to better self-manage their condition,” said Jodi Lavin-Tompkins, director of accreditation, AADE. “That is why we need programs like KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care to make these services available in their community.”
AADE is a National Accredited Organization (NAO) for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Accredited programs must meet the 2017 National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support; 10 standards that are revised every five years by a group of diabetes educators representing both AADE and the American Diabetes Association and approved by CMS. Programs must maintain compliance with the Standards during the four-year accreditation cycle.
KentuckyOne Health Diabetes and Nutrition Care also provides individualized education for people with hypertension, hyperlipidemia and celiac disease, among other nutritional issues. Weight loss consultations are offered as well.
