CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Neurology in Lexington Adds Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to Team

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 13, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Neurology in Lexington has added Kelly Taylor, DNP, APRN, AGCNS-BC, to its team of caregivers. With more than 25 years of experience as a registered nurse, Taylor has worked in acute care, home health and home infusion and transitional care, and specializes in working with patients suffering from neurological disorders and in the treatment and prevention of acute stroke.

Taylor said the field of nursing – and neurology specifically – wasn’t something she chose; rather, it chose her. She said showing empathy to patients and making them feel comfortable during a hospital stay or an office visit is one aspect she has enjoyed most about her career.

“I enjoy listening to patients and their concerns, and I want to be somebody that puts them at ease,” said Taylor. “I believe part of being a good provider is not just knowing all the answers, but actually listening and letting patients know that while I may not have all the answers, I will do everything I can to help them find the answers.”

Taylor said part of that help comes from using sound clinical judgment and providing patient counseling when needed. As a disease prevention and intervention specialist, Taylor enjoys being able to help guide patients through their health care journey.

“Caring for stroke patients is my passion,” said Taylor. “Neurology is something that takes a lot of investigation, and I like being a part of that work. For example, anyone who’s had a stroke needs to have follow-up appointments as we may be still trying to find the cause of their stroke. I want to be able to prevent something new from happening to these patients and give the best treatment options available.” Secondary prevention is crucial when dealing with strokes.

In addition to caring for stroke patients, Taylor helps patients suffering from other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, seizures and neuropathy. She said being a resource when a primary care physician has done all they can is an essential aspect of the work and care she provides.

“In many primary care settings, they may not have all the tools we have access to working in neurology,” said Taylor. “It’s important to get a second opinion to ensure all possible disease processes are being taken into consideration.”

Earlier in her career, Taylor worked in several surgical and intensive care units, caring for complex post-operative patients and helping with pain management and recovery. Taylor has also provided nurse coaching in the home for patients discharged from the hospital diagnosed with pneumonia, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to help prevent readmission to the hospital.

While she grew up in eastern Kentucky, Taylor has dedicated her entire career to serving the Lexington community, graduating with Bachelor of Science and in nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Kentucky. Taylor is certified as an Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist and is a member of the American Nurses Association.

When she is away from work, Taylor spends time watching UK sports, going to festivals, reading and going on vacation. She enjoys spending time with her husband of 24 years and their two adult children.

Taylor is practicing at CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Neurology in Lexington, located at 1021 Majestic Drive, Suite 200. To make an appointment, call 859.296.1922.
