BARDSTOWN, Ky. (June 21, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) in Bardstown has added Katy Marcum, APRN, to its team of caregivers. Marcum was born and raised in Nelson County. She began her career as a registered nurse in labor and delivery at Flaget Memorial Hospital.
Marcum knew from a young age that she wanted to care for her community and give back. She pursued nursing, where she was initially interested in labor and delivery because it gave her more time with each patient and allowed her to form deep relationships with each one. She said she enjoys being able to make a difference in her patients' health.
“As far as addressing health inequities, it all starts in our offices where we work to make a difference in bettering our patients’ health overall,” said Marcum. “My philosophy on health care is that decisions should always be a joint conversation. I love talking with each patient about their treatment plan and working with them to make any necessary changes.”
In addition to working more than five years in labor and delivery, Marcum is also a certified lactation counselor, helping new mothers with breastfeeding. She said women’s health has been a primary passion in her career.
There’s a lack of education out there regarding women’s health care,” said Marcum. “But helping care for the women of our community is imperative because it helps to take care of the family unit as a whole – mothers are the backbone of the family, but some women push their health aside while they’re busy caring for everything else. I place importance on educating women about the importance of routine screenings – taking better care of themselves means taking better care of their families.”
Marcum’s care philosophy over the past 12 years centers around a high quality, holistic approach to reaching optimal health outcomes for patients. Marcum said being there for her patients is all about showing compassion.
“I’ve always wanted to serve the community, and I’ve always enjoyed helping,” said Marcum. “That’s why I got into nursing – being able to collaborate with a physician and other health professionals to prepare a comprehensive patient care plan to help them on their road to recovery.”
Marcum received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Midway University and her master’s degree from Frontier Nursing University. She has had more than 12 years of experience in obstetrics, nursing and gynecology, and pain management. Before returning to CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group as an APRN, Marcum spent the past few years in pain management.
When Marcum isn’t serving others, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their three young children, gardening, reading and doing anything that involves being outdoors.
Marcum is practicing at CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Obstetrics & Gynecology in Bardstown, located at 4359 New Shepherdsville Rd., Suite 255. To make an appointment, call 502.350.5800.
