James Graham Brown Cancer Center Receives Three-Year Accreditation by the American College of Radiology
Louisville, Ky. (September 5, 2014)— The Radiation Oncology Department at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, part of KentuckyOne Health, has been awarded another three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR, a national professional organization, is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body, with more than 600 accredited sites and 27 years of accreditation history. The accreditation is awarded only to facilities that meet specific practice guidelines and technical standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field.
The James Graham Brown Cancer Center Radiation Oncology department consists of six board-certified physicians working with board-certified radiation therapists, a team of oncology nurses and a dosimetrist, among others.
Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed by the ACR prior to accreditation.
“Our hospital, doctors and staff works extremely hard to make sure that we are doing everything we can to provide the best outcomes for our patients,” said Donald Miller, M.D., director, James Graham Brown Cancer Center. “Continued recognition from the American College of Radiology is an important confirmation that we continue to lead the way in cancer care in the region.”
The James Graham Brown Cancer Center opened in 1981 with a $12 million gift from the James Graham Brown Foundation and the citizens of Louisville with a mission of relieving the pain and suffering caused by cancer in Kentucky. The center is a partnership between KentuckyOne Health and the University of Louisville with a robust clinical and basic science research program. Combining these research elements in a treatment environment provides the best opportunity for discovery of new techniques and therapies. It has been ranked as one of the best hospitals for 2014-15 for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report, which recognizes hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.
