LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 28, 2022) – Nicole Goodin, MD, has joined CHI Saint Joseph Health – Behavioral Health in Lexington, where she looks forward to helping patients with medication management and treatment for the root causes of mental illness. Dr. Goodin comes to CHI Saint Joseph Health after spending the last two years working as a psychiatrist at LifeStance Health in Frankfort.
Born and raised in Lexington, Dr. Goodin spent five years in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was Triple Board Chief Resident for Child Psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She also served as psychiatrist on duty at the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Furman University before completing her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
“I was always interested in the human mind and how it works. I was a neuroscience major and was interested in psychology and what made people do what they do,” Dr. Goodin said. “When I got into medical school, I realized how much I enjoyed working with kids. They’re very resilient, and I felt like I could do more to get them on the track to success by intervening early rather than treating problems later in life.”
Dr. Goodin is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (General Psychiatry), and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).
Dr. Goodin said she has a holistic philosophy of care and “treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit.” While she has a passion for working with children, she also enjoys the complex treatment that can come with treating adults.
“I like practicing with adults too because there are so many new medicines on the market that you can’t really use with children,” Dr. Goodin said. “When you see a big difference in people who get the right treatment – that’s extremely fulfilling to me.”
Dr. Goodin notes that this also played a part in her career path.
“It was that dual aspect of being able to do therapy as well as treat the biological aspect of mental illness, which is where medicine comes into play, that really led me to pursue medical school,” Dr. Goodin said. “I’m also big on some of the simple things, like getting enough exercise and sleep, because all of that co-mingles to address your mental health.”
Dr. Goodin has extensive teaching experience, presenting at more than half a dozen conferences, including the Pediatrics Noon Conference and the Journal Club to the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In 2009, while serving as a Research Assistant at the University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, she also worked on a significant research project, analyzing the prevalence of childhood ADHD in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease patients.
Dr. Goodin and her husband Joe have two children. In her free time, Dr. Goodin enjoys spending time with her family, taking her dogs on walks, hiking, traveling and reading.
Dr. Goodin is accepting new patients and will practice at CHI Saint Joseph Health – Behavioral Health in Lexington, located at 3581 Harrodsburg Road, Suite, 350. For more information or to make an appointment, patients can call 859.313.6333.
