SOMERSET, Ky. (March 21, 2023) – Dana Gibson, MD, recently joined CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Primary Care in Somerset. The pediatrician has more than three decades of experience in medicine. Dr. Gibson brings his patient-first approach to his new team and the Somerset community he loves.
Dr. Gibson retired from medicine in 2021 but decided to continue doing what he loves. He said he originally went into pediatrics because he enjoyed caring for children and watching them grow. He admits that he tried to give that up too early.
“I wasn’t ready to retire yet. I missed my career more than I thought I would,” said Dr. Gibson. “I always wanted to be of service, and I just felt it was my calling to help people.”
A love of giving back is why Dr. Gibson served with the U.S. Army Reserve while finishing his medical education. In medical school, he found a strong pull toward pediatrics and discovered it to be the most rewarding field for him.
“When you interact with a patient to make them healthier and help them reach their full potential, it warms your heart,” said Dr. Gibson. “That is especially true when you work with kids. You help them overcome their toughest hurdles, then they grow up and go off to school or work. It’s rewarding to see them make those changes.”
For Dr. Gibson, it is all about the patient. He said making sure the patient and their family have their questions answered is crucial. His goal is to work with patients as a partner in their healthcare. He believes a patient-centered, personal approach is the best.

“Nowadays, we see a lack of access and communication from providers to parents,” said Dr. Gibson. “We need to remember that great care is centered around the patient and communication is key in successful treatment.”
Dr. Gibson attended Eastern Kentucky University, where he graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry. He later earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky. He also received a Southern Medical Association Certificate in Business Administration for Physicians at Auburn University and a Master of Arts in religion at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Virginia. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Gibson also teaches students in pediatrics and is a member of multiple professional organizations.
Dr. Gibson has been married to his wife Thalia for 33 years. They have one son, one grandson, two dogs and one on the way. He and his wife enjoy going to concerts, are Ham radio operators and like working around the house in their spare time.
