CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiology Welcomes Dr. Sharat Koul

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 2, 2023) – Sharat Koul, MD, recently joined the CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiology team in Lexington, Nicholasville, Mount Sterling and Lebanon. Dr. Koul brings more than two decades of medical experience and a selfless, patient-first philosophy to the team.

Dr. Koul has served communities across the country, working at hospitals and medical centers in Evanston, Ill., Chicago, Lexington, Ky., Atlanta and Danville, where he served as medical director of Vascular Disease and Limb Preservation at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Dr. Koul has spent the last 15 years in the cardiovascular field as an interventional cardiologist and medical director. Dr. Koul said his favorite part of the profession is building and maintaining relationships with his patients.

“Health care can be very scary and confusing, so I strive to spend time with my patients and make sure they feel comfortable,” said Dr. Koul. “I’m not just the doctor who puts the stent in for cardiovascular procedures; I’m here to build a relationship throughout their treatment and beyond to optimize their health.”

Dr. Koul said he prefers to be an educator and advisor to his patients and believes it is essential for patients to understand every option available to them, allowing him to develop a comprehensive treatment plan with them and their families.

“I don’t look to tell patients what to do,” said Dr. Koul. “I want to understand the entire problem as clearly as possible and guide them in their decision-making. I want patients to feel good about their decision.”

Dr. Koul said the most rewarding part of his job is seeing the mental, emotional and physical impact his care has on his patients.

“I think our patients and their families appreciate the work we do with them. You can see it in the way they talk to you and look at you when interacting with them,” said Dr. Koul. “It’s a real honor and blessing to impact people and their lives, as well as their families’ lives.”

Dr. Koul earned his Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Virginia and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. He completed medical training at the Cleveland Clinic. His work has been published more than a dozen times in manuscripts, publications and journals. Dr. Koul also co-owns a Carotid Artery Mechanical Dilatation-Perfusion Catheter patent. Dr. Koul is certified in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, among other certifications. He is also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.

In his spare time, Dr. Koul enjoys spending time with his wife and two teenage children, fine-tuning his stone sculpting skills, and watching sports, especially college basketball. He is also an avid photographer.
