LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group– Behavioral Health in Lexington welcomes Sean T. Butterbaugh, MD, to its behavioral health team. Dr. Butterbaugh, who joined the group on September 1, 2023, brings to the team business education and medical experience with his deep commitment to patient care. Originally from Paducah, Dr. Butterbaugh's journey into medicine began at a young age.
"For me, it’s always what I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid. I had my heart set on being in medicine, and I never shook that desire to do it," said Dr. Butterbaugh. "I thought I wanted to do oncology for a long time, and then during my third year of medical school, I had psychiatry as my last clinical rotation. I realized I enjoyed hearing people’s stories, what makes them unique, and how those experiences can make a current experience more difficult. There are ways we can help with that even after difficult things have occurred.”
Dr. Butterbaugh's expertise and dual approach to patient care make him an excellent addition to the CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group - Behavioral Health team. His dedication to helping patients navigate the complexities of mental and physical health aligns perfectly with CHI's mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. Dr. Butterbaugh says he strongly believes in the interconnectedness of mental and physical health.
"Mental health is a physical health, and they’re intricately tied. Those struggling with physical health often have mental health issues and vice versa," he emphasized.
Dr. Butterbaugh's unique background includes receiving his Master of Business Administration in 2018 from the University of Kentucky, where he also received his Doctor of Medicine in 2019. He pursued the MBA during his third year of medical school. During this program, he gained valuable insights into health care management and efficiency. Dr. Butterbaugh completed his residency in general psychiatry in Charlotte, North Carolina, in June of 2023, where he was chief resident. He says his return to Lexington was a heartfelt decision.
“As soon as I could, I wanted to return to Lexington, which is where I met my wife and had my first child. It felt like home,” he said.
Dr. Butterbaugh and his wife have two daughters, aged 4 and 18 months. Outside of medicine, Dr. Butterbaugh enjoys spending time with his family and indulging in outdoor activities like hiking.
Dr. Butterbaugh is practicing at CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Behavioral Health in Lexington, located at 3581 Harrodsburg Road, Suite 350. To make an appointment, call 859.313.6333.
