CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group Announces New Addition to Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine Team in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 23, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group welcomes Ibrahim Shahoub, MD, an accomplished physician specializing in pulmonology and critical care medicine. Dr. Shahoub brings a deep commitment to exceptional patient care to the CHI Saint Joseph Health team and hopes to help more Kentuckians suffering from COPD and lung cancer. Dr. Shahoub’s journey in medicine started early with a determination to make profound improvements in people’s lives.

“When I was in high school, I discovered helping people is the most satisfying job you can do,” said Dr. Shahoub. “The passion to help other people was what inspired me to become a physician.”

Dr. Shahoub’s commitment to his patients is exemplified by his extensive experience in critical care, where he has been involved in complex and lifesaving interventions. He believes in the power of critical thinking and swift decision-making, particularly in the intensive care unit, where it can make all the difference in saving lives.

“Nothing is as meaningful as when a patient who was on the brink of death walks out of the hospital,” said Dr. Shahoub. “When treating patients, I think compassion comes as the top priority. People get sick, and they feel weak. Put your hand in their hand, they feel it, and it gives you a rewarding feeling.”

Born in Zliten, Libya, Dr. Shahoub embarked on his medical career at the University of Tripoli School of Medicine, where he earned his MBBCh degree, the equivalent of an MD. His dedication to furthering his medical knowledge led him to the United States, where he completed the United States Medical Licensing Examination and became certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

Dr. Shahoub then entered the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University, where he honed his skills in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions. Following his residency, he completed fellowships in both pulmonary medicine at Marshall University and critical care medicine at the University of Kentucky. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. Additionally, he holds certifications in basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, and advanced trauma life support.

Dr. Shahoub and his family have found a home in Lexington, a city that offers them the balance between work and family life they were seeking. His wife and two children have embraced the community and enjoy activities like swimming, soccer, basketball and spending quality time together. Dr. Shahoub said his dedication to his profession and patients led him to CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group in Lexington, where he believes the environment centers on patients, employees, and good business.

“I think Lexington is a city where you can settle down and raise your kids,” said Dr. Shahoub. “It’s where you can find the balance in life and a quality job. I think it’s a good match for us.”

Dr. Shahoub is practicing at CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in Lexington, located at 1401 Harrodsburg Road, Suite C-405. To make an appointment, call 859.276.4429.
