LONDON, Ky. (Oct. 23, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Surgery welcomes accomplished general surgeon Nicholas Capal, DO, MS, to Laurel County. Dr. Capal’s journey into medicine began with a desire to make a meaningful impact, and today, he specializes in providing surgical solutions that improve the health and well-being of his patients.
Growing up, Dr. Capal always had a fascination with medicine, although he wasn’t initially certain which medical path he would follow. During his clinical rotations, the allure of surgery became undeniable.
“I knew I always wanted to be a doctor because of the subject matter, initially,” said Dr. Capal. “Surgery and the ability to fix a health problem with your hands right away drew me to surgery.”
During his residency, Dr. Capal gained extensive experience in trauma, critical care and acute care surgery. He also developed a proficiency in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques. As a general surgeon, Dr. Capal embraces the diversity of cases that come his way, from trauma and gall bladder surgeries to cancer operations. His patient-centric philosophy underscores the importance of forging a partnership between physician and patient. He believes patient education is paramount.
“I encourage patients to actively participate in their health care journey, ensuring that they comprehend every facet, from diagnosis to post-operative recovery,” he said. “I aim to provide recommendations and help patients get through the process.”
Originally from Cincinnati, Dr. Capal spent nine years in Youngstown, Ohio, pursuing his medical education and training. He completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 2018. Following medical school, he embarked on a general surgery residency at Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, a community-based hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center in Ohio.
Dr. Capal’s decision to join Saint Joseph London was influenced by both professional and personal reasons. He was already familiar with the area, as he had family members living in the region for 15 years.
“The warm and inviting atmosphere convinced me that this was the ideal place to practice medicine and provide exceptional patient care where it’s needed,” said Dr. Capal. “I like the ability to manage a wide range of issues, and I like this patient population because they are very grateful for the help that they receive."
Dr. Capal said he also wants to bring patients a wellspring of information, emotional support, and solace during critical moments. Beyond his medical career, Dr. Capal enjoys quality time with his family. He and his wife have two active boys, ages 13 and 4. He enjoys dirt biking and skeet shooting and has a unique affinity for bonsai trees.
