LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 30, 2025) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Surgery in Lexington welcomes Andrei Cocieru, MD, to its team. Dr. Cocieru specializes in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery, addressing complex conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and bile duct. Originally from Moldova, Dr. Cocieru discovered his passion for health care early in life.
“My mom was a family physician and served as an example to me,” said Dr. Cocieru. “As a result, I was attracted to this field at an early age. I was initially interested in medicine but was intrigued by surgery right away. From there, I got to work with some physicians doing research in the area of liver surgery. I knew I wanted to be involved with this kind of surgery.”
Dr. Andrei Cocieru brings extensive general surgery and surgical oncology expertise to CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Surgery.
He specializes in the surgical management of liver, pancreas, and bile duct diseases, offering both open and minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedures.
Dr. Cocieru earned his medical degree in Chisinau, Moldova. After moving to the United States, he completed his surgical residency at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut and pursued a research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He then completed advanced training at Duke University Medical Center to further hone his hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery skills. Dr. Cocieru is board-certified in both HPB surgery and general surgery.
With a commitment to multidisciplinary care and comprehensive follow-up, Dr. Cocieru strives to ensure his patients achieve the best possible outcomes and long-term well-being.
“Because I’m dealing with tertiary care problems, the majority of my patients are coming from other physicians, gastroenterologists and oncologists. It’s very important for me to work in tandem with other specialties,” Dr. Cocieru said. “Also, because I’m taking care of a complex problem, I work extensively with physicians and other specialists.”
Dr. Cocieru has been married to his wife, a fellow physician from Moldova, for more than 20 years. Together, they have two kids and enjoy traveling and spending time with family.
