LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2024) – CHI Saint Joseph Health – Pulmonology & Critical Care in Lexington is pleased to welcome Emhemmid Karem, MD, to its team of health care providers. Dr. Karem's passion for medicine began in childhood, inspired by the care he received from doctors and their impact on his life.
“When I was a child, I saw what doctors did for me, and that made me love medicine,” said Dr. Karem. “I see the difference doctors can make in a patient’s life, how much they help and how they can change the outcome. That’s why I’m passionate about critical care - because of the immediate impact you can have on a patient’s life.”
Dr. Karem specializes in pulmonology and critical care, providing inpatient and outpatient care to his patients. His training in Huntington, West Virginia, gave him experience with a patient base similar to that in Kentucky, influencing his decision to practice in the region. Dr. Karem also brings extensive experience in treating patients with conditions related to black lung, a significant health concern in eastern Kentucky due to its history of coal mining.
With a focus on patient-centered care, Dr. Karem emphasizes the importance of time, patience and honesty when treating his patients. “You have to give time to your patients, be detailed and honest with them. Building a good relationship with patients impacts the outcome - it’s key to achieving a good diagnosis and a successful treatment plan.”
Dr. Karem earned his medical degree from the University of Tripoli in Libya in 2008. He completed his internal medicine residency and Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.
Outside of work, Dr. Karem enjoys spending time with his four children and traveling whenever possible.
