Weight Loss Surgery Requirements
At CHI Saint Joseph Health, our personalized bariatric surgery program is tailored for lasting weight loss. For over two decades, the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Saint Joseph East has been a beacon of hope for individuals seeking to transform their lives through weight loss surgery. Accredited by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons since 2005, our commitment to excellence has remained unwavering.
We’re here to help you achieve a healthier, more fulfilling life. In order to qualify for weight loss surgery, please keep in mind these patient requirements:
Bariatric Surgery Qualifications
- BMI: You must have a BMI greater than 40 to qualify based on BMI alone. If your BMI is greater than 35, you still qualify if you also suffer from conditions related to obesity such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.
- Previous Weight Loss Attempts: You must demonstrate a history of unsuccessful attempts to lose weight on your own.
- Abstain from Alcohol or Drug Consumption: You may need to stop alcohol or drug consumption to ensure the best possible results and minimize potential complications.

Bariatric Surgery Evaluation Process
Our Bariatric Surgery Evaluation Process is a comprehensive screening procedure designed to ensure the safety and suitability of candidates. During the initial visit, patients will meet with a multidisciplinary team, which may include a surgeon, dietitian, psychologist and other health care professionals. Each specialist plays a crucial role in assessing different aspects of the patient's health and lifestyle.
The evaluation will cover various topics, including medical history, previous weight loss attempts, current health conditions and lifestyle factors. Psychological assessments may also be conducted to gauge the patient's readiness for the emotional and lifestyle changes associated with bariatric surgery. This collaborative approach allows the health care team to tailor the treatment plan to the individual needs of the patient, fostering a holistic and effective weight loss journey.
Getting Insurance Coverage
Understanding the qualifications for insurance coverage is essential for those considering bariatric surgery. While specific criteria may vary among insurance providers, common qualifications often include a high BMI, documented attempts at non-surgical weight loss, and obesity-related health conditions.
Patients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to inquire about coverage for bariatric surgery. Insurance companies typically have specific procedures and documentation requirements, and providers can guide patients through this process. It is important to note that insurance providers are often willing to assist in navigating the coverage process, providing information on necessary documentation and supporting their policyholders in accessing the benefits available for bariatric surgery. Taking this proactive step can significantly contribute to a smoother and more informed path toward obtaining insurance coverage for this transformative procedure.
Beyond the numbers on the scale, there’s a wealth of positive outcomes from losing weight. With a track record that speaks volumes, here's why our program stands out:
Exceptional Outcomes
- Low Complications Rates: Our complication levels consistently meet or exceed national standards, comparable to other intra-abdominal procedures such as laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.
- Swift Recovery: With an average hospital length of stay of just one day and a return to work within a week for either procedure, our patients experience minimal disruption to their lives.
- Health Improvements: Weight loss surgery isn't just about shedding pounds; it's about reclaiming health. Over 85% of our patients experience resolution of conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
- Cancer Risk Reduction: Studies show that weight loss surgery reduces the risk of various cancers, including breast, colon, liver, pancreas, uterine, and ovarian.
- Fertility Boost: Many patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) experience resolution of their condition post-surgery, leading to increased fertility rates.
- Extended Lifespan: On average, patients who undergo weight loss surgery can expect to add 9 to 12 years to their life expectancy, thanks to reduced cardiovascular disease risk and other health benefits.
- Joint Health: Weight loss surgery often leads to improvement in osteoarthritis in weight-bearing joints, enhancing mobility and quality of life.
