PGY1 Training Program
Learning Experiences are offered in a variety of direct patient care and hospital practice settings. While on clinical service, the resident’s responsibilities include working with health care team members through participation in multidisciplinary rounds, monitoring drug therapy, providing drug information and pharmacokinetic consultations, providing patient education and counseling, and identifying/preventing medication errors or adverse events. The following core Learning Experiences are required elements of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Additional elective Learning Experiences are also available.
Core Learning Experiences
Orientation
The resident will begin the residency year by orienting central pharmacy functions, department policies and procedures, electronic medical records/computer systems, patient monitoring, clinical documentation, ACLS training/code response and residency reserach project details and timelines.
Internal Medicine
The resident will assess and manage drug therapies for patients on general medical/surgical floors, respond to consults for medication dosing or information, identify potential drug therapy problems and perform appropriate interventions and collaborate with the health care team.
Critical Care (Medical/Surgical)
The resident will participate in multidisciplinary rounding with the intensive care unit team, identifying therapeutic needs of critically ill patients, develop treatment plans and monitor care for efficacy and toxicity.
Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery
The resident will acquire skills in the principles of managing various cardiovascular disease states and conditions including congestive heart failure, common cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, interventional procedures, post-interventional care, post-surgical patient management and advanced cardiothoracic pharmacy.
Comprehensive Site Care (Saint Joseph East)
The resident will participate in provision of comprehensive clinical and departmental pharmacy services for patients in various levels of care (intensive care, medical/surgical, general admissions) at our Saint Joseph East campus. Activities will include clinical pharmacy consultation, therapeutic drug monitoring, multidisciplinary rounding, engaging in clinical interventions, medication use system surveillance and educational opportunities.
Ambulatory Hematology/Oncology
The resident will become familiar with various treatment regimens for hematology and oncology disease states, preparation of chemotherapy, patient education and counseling, and ambulatory care management.
Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Management Team (AMT) Service
Residents will participate in daily Antimicrobial Management Team service activities including prospective review of culture and susceptibility data, rounding with the ID consult service and providing support and recommendations for the selection and streamlining of antimicrobial therapy.
Neurology/Stroke Care
This experience allows the resident to participate in the care of patients admitted to the neurology/telemetry unit where the resident to have the opportunity to monitor patients who present with CVA, TIA and seizures.
