PGY1 Training Program
Clinical experiences are offered in a variety of areas in the Pharmacy Residency Program and are tailored to the interests of the individual resident. While on clinical service, the resident’s responsibilities include working with healthcare team members through participation on rounds, monitoring drug therapy, providing drug information and pharmacokinetic consultations, and attending various conferences. The following Core Experiences are required during the pharmacy practice residency. Additional elective experiences are also available.
Core Experiences
Internal Medicine
The resident will assess and manage drug therapies for patients on general medical/surgical floors, respond to consults for medication dosing or information, identify potential drug therapy problems and perform appropriate interventions, and collaborate with the healthcare team.
Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Management Team (AMT) Service
Residents will participate in daily Antimicrobial Management Team service activities including prospective review of culture and susceptibility data, rounding with the ID consult service, and providing support and recommendations for the selection and streamlining of antimicrobial therapy.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
The resident will acquire skills in the principles of managing various cardiovascular disease states and conditions including congestive heart failure, common cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, interventional procedures, post-interventional care, post-surgical patient management, and advanced cardiothoracic pharmacy.
Stroke/Neurology
This experience allows the resident to participate in the care of patients admitted to the neurology/telemetry unit where the resident to have the opportunity to monitor patients who present with CVA, TIA and seizures..
Critical Care
The resident will participate in multidisciplinary rounding with the intensive care unit team, identifying therapeutic needs of critically ill patients, develop treatment plans, and monitor care for efficacy and toxicity.
Ambulatory Hematology/Oncology
The resident will become familiar with various treatment regimens for hematology and oncology disease states, preparation of chemotherapy, patient education and counseling, and ambulatory care management.
Transitional Care
The resident will participate in a robust pharmacist driven transitional care and medication reconciliation service. Activities involve review of admission and discharge medication therapies, identification and resolution of errors and discrepancies, patient and provider education, and collaboration with all members of the healthcare team.
