About the Paid Nurse Extern Program at CHI Saint Joseph Health
CHI Saint Joseph Health offers nursing students two opportunities:
- An 8-week summer externship.
- A PRN externship opportunity anytime of the year.
During the externship, you'll work alongside registered nurses at one of our facilities across Kentucky to apply the knowledge you have gained in your academic program to the clinical setting. Students are eligible the summer before graduation. The extern assignments will be at one of our CHI Saint Joseph Health locations.

Program Objectives
Our nurse extern program strives to help participants:
- Increase patient care management, organizational and time management skills.
- Demonstrate greater proficiency with clinical skills.
- Experience professional growth and increased self-confidence in caring for patients.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
- Must be actively enrolled in either ADN, BSN or LPN Programs, in good academic standing and must have successfully completed the Nursing Fundamentals Course (or related equivalent).
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association.
