HealthBreak, brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health.

The aorta is the most important blood vessel of the body, but over the years, parts of this vessel's wall can become weak and possibly rupture. Dr. George Dimeling explains who is most at risk for an aortic aneurysm.

George Dimeling, MD, CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Hypertensive patients should be screened. Smokers should be screened. If somebody in your family has had aortic disease or had an aneurysm, or your doctors ever told you that you had a murmur or an enlarged aorta.

You should ask your primary care provider to screen you, and then they can refer you over to Saint Joseph’s cardiac surgery for evaluation.

Aortic surgery requires a very refined, experienced surgeon to perform these surgeries. They require very complex ways to keep the patient safe and protected during the surgery and then after the surgery. Saint Joseph does this very well.
